Investigations are underway after a fire broke out at an unidentified church in Chilliwack, Monday afternoon. It is believed that the fire began in the roof space shortly before 3:00 p.m.
Chilliwack Fire Department says that after receiving reports of smoke, they dispatched firefighters to Cross Connection Church at Williams Street and Princess Avenue.
When crews tried to enter, they were confronted with high heat and dense smoke.

CFD stated in a release that “due to rapidly deteriorating building conditions, all firefighters have been pulled back” and commenced defensive fire-suppression operations using several aerial master stream and handlines for the rest of the incident.
It was difficult to fight fires in the old wooden structure, which is 75 years old. The department said that heavy smoke, fires, and “multiple structural collapses” were all obstacles.
In the evening, a heavy piece of equipment was brought on the scene to remove collapse hazards and begin demolishing parts of a building.
The Fire Department says that some items and documents of great importance have been “recovered successfully” by the firefighters and were returned to those members at the church.
In the department’s report, two firefighters sustained minor injuries as they battled the blaze. Other than that, no one reported an injury.
Chilliwack Fire has begun an investigation into the fire.
