The Mentor Avenue, Hopkins Road and Johnnycake Ridge Road are now open. Now all major roads are open. As crews work to remove debris and power lines, several side streets are still closed.
Most of the roads in Mentor can now be used, with the exceptions of those involving wires and branches. CEI has begun de-energizing the downed lines that are still entangled, so the Public Works Department may remove the debris. Drivers should observe any road closures, and treat traffic signals that are not working as four-way stop signs.
This morning, the Mentor Senior Center opened its doors at 7 AM to serve as a shelter for community members. The Mentor Senior Center served 17 individuals. No one expressed a need for long-term care or to stay overnight. American Red Cross disbanded at 2:00 PM. Mentor Senior Center is open until 5pm tonight. The Mentor Senior Center will be open Saturday, August 26th, 2023 from 9 AM until 3 PM.
According to the NWS Cleveland Office it was determined that a EF1 Tornado touched down at Mentor, approximately 1/4 mile west of Great Lakes Mall. It then continued along a path towards Chillicothe Road. The wind speed was estimated to be 110 MPH. Please refer to NWS for additional information.
CEI says that 95% of CEI’s customers will have power restored by 4 PM, August 30th 2023. It is important that residents plan for an extended outage. This goes especially well in areas most affected by the storm.
Reminding residents to follow safety precautions is also important. Generators should not be operated indoors or close to windows.
Next week, arrangements for the removal and disposal of yard waste in all affected areas will become public. Anyone with branches larger than 6 inches is instructed to contact a contractor privately.

Lake County received a tornado warning shortly after midnight. The Lake County Emergency Management Agency activated tornado sirens.
Storm damage in southwest part of city was significant. The area is roughly bounded by SR-20, (Mentor Avenue), SR-84, (Johnnycake Ridge Road), SR-306 and SR-615 on west and east.
As a result of downed wires and tree branches, a number city streets have become impassable. Mentor Safety Forces are assessing the damage to determine priority and determining how best to respond. The public works teams are first reopening the major thoroughfares before moving on to residential streets.
The Mentor Schools will CLOSED Friday August 25, 2023.
Mentor Senior Center located on 8484 Munson Road, will open at 7 AM as a shelter for the community. Snacks and water will be available.
The public works and safety forces of Mentor are fully staffed. The service requests have all been met.
All downed cables should be treated as live. Call the Mentor Dispatch Non-Emergency Line at 440-251234 to report downed wiring.
At this point, it is not known if damage caused by a tornado touched down. National Weather Service is investigating the extent of the explosion.
