Two people were rescued by firefighters from an engulfing house fire in Plymouth that spread to the neighbouring roof.
Firefighters rescued two people from an enormous house fire that they could not escape. Smoke billowed into the air as smoke from the blaze spread to another property.
Last night (December 2), around 9:10pm, fire crews responded to the intersection of North Prospect Road near the St Neots surgery at the corner with Segrave Road. The trapped victims were quickly brought to safety and placed under the care of the paramedics.
Call was placed by the resident of the home where the fire started, who said they couldn’t find an exit. Plymouth sent three fire engines to the scene immediately, while an operator was on the phone with the caller for support and advice.
The fire crews continued to work on the scene until 11.30pm, when the main flames had been extinguished. However, hot spots were still a problem. The fire was confirmed to have started in the bathroom.
The fire was caused by an accident, according to the findings of a fire investigation. The home suffered 50 percent fire damage, and 100 percent smoke damage. The damage to neighbouring properties hasn’t been determined, but it is believed that the fire spread through the roof.
According to a spokesperson from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, “Fire Control received a phone call from the occupant of the house who could not evacuate because there was a fire.” Fire control operators from Plymouth mobilised three pumps immediately, while an operator on the phone with the caller gave advice about fire safety.
The details about the location of the caller within the building were given to the firefighters on the scene, and the occupants trapped inside the house could be rescued quickly. The request was for additional aerial ladder platforms and appliances to be mobilized to help control the situation. Two more fire engines were also deployed, making a total of five fire apparatuses and supporting personnel.
For extinguishing the fire, crews used three safety jets, six breathing apparatus and three hose reels jets.
