The Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area is hit by a storm with winds up to 140km/h and heavy rain. At least thirteen people are killed after the roof of a Bahia Blanca sports club collapses.

At least 13 people were killed Saturday by a powerful storm which swept through Buenos Aires City Province.

Local authorities reported that the deaths took place in Bahia blanca, a port city. A wall part and the roof collapsed onto those who were inside.

According to local sources, the heavy rains that pounded Bahia Blanca and the wind caused the wall and roof of a building where an ice skating contest was being held to collapse.

The municipality issued a press release confirming the deaths of 13 individuals in the Bahiense del Norte Club. It added that the firefighters worked at the scene where the people were still trapped beneath rubble.

Bahiense del Norte, a sports club in northern Argentina that is very well known locally is where Emanuel ‘Manu’ Ginobili began his basketball career. Ginobili is a legend from the NBA League of America and Argentinean national team.

In parts of the city power was lost due to winds exceeding 140 km/h (87 miles per hour).

On social media, President Javier Milei (left) and Vice-President Victoria Villarruel (right) posted condolence messages to the family members of those who died and were injured. The president and vice-president said that aid was already sent to Bahia blanca.

The National Government monitors the sensitive situation created by the storm in the province of Buenos Aires, we report from the office of the president of the Argentine Republic. Milei wrote in his blog that he advised the public to monitor the weather and to, if needed, stay home at the dawn hours.

He added: “The President expresses deepest sympathy to the family and friends of all those killed by the storm.”

On Saturday, heavy rains and strong winds swept through the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, causing damage to trees, flooding and other problems.

Buenos Aires was hit by gusts that reached speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour, causing trees and cars to fall.

Social media users posted pictures of objects being knocked over and roofs being ripped by strong winds.

Due to the weather, several flights at both main airports were cancelled. The storm caused several flights to be cancelled at the two main air terminals.

The National Meteorological Service of Argentina (SMN), issued a warning for the short term at 1am, stating that storms would be continuing with strong winds and heavy rainfall.
