Council of National Monuments ordered Metropolitan Regional Government (MRG) to stop cleaning statues at the Alameda because, according to their argument, it would cause irreparable damages to the statues.
A publication by Los Heroes confirms the intervention carried out on four MPs located between Vergara Street and Almirante Latorre Street. It also states that “these monuments were damaged irreversibly due to highly aggressive and invasive methods.”
The entity explained that the “more layers applied to the surface, the higher the resistance for removal.” This means that the support will have to be subjected “to very aggressive processes without taking into account the disintegration or cracks found beneath the paint layers, particularly in the lower part of certain pedestals, which present weakness and material loss.”
The organization also concluded that on the ground “a great loss of support material was verified.” This is why they made sure that the “damage done to a monument national is classified.” They informed the government that the “work of intervention that is currently carried out by all MPs in the Alameda-axis should be immediately suspended in order not to continue to cause damage to them.”
Orrego, for his part described the obstruction as “unusual”, claiming that now “those responsible for causing the damage will be those who clean it up.”
