The UN’s humanitarian office reported that Israel has been able to destroy or damage at least 42 percent (or more) of the housing units within the Gaza Strip as a direct result of its continuous attacks.
In a statement to The New Arab, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that “about 15,100 housing units have been destroyed and 10,656 are uninhabitable.”
OCHA said that “further, 139,000 residential units suffered minor or moderate damages, which point to entire neighborhoods being destroyed, particularly in Beit Haun, Beit Lhia and Shujaiya as well as the area in between Gaza and Beach Refugee Camp, and Abasan Kbira at Khan Yunis.”
In a statement, the United Nations Satellite Center explained that after an assessment was conducted of the North Gaza Governorate, 927 buildings were destroyed and 4,337 others suffered damage ranging from moderate to severe, which is equivalent to 15 percent of buildings.
According to OCHA, the evaluation consisted of comparing photos taken on 15 October 2023 and those on 1 May 20,23.
OCHA emphasized that Israel’s attacks continued “unabated” at a moment when the death toll of Palestinians has reached 4,385 people, 62 percent being children and women. More than 1,000 Palestinians have gone missing, and it is presumed they are trapped under rubble or have died.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, at least 98 Palestinian households lost 10 or more family members. 95 Palestinian families have lost 6 to 9 members and 357 Palestinian families between 2 and 5 members.
According to the ministry, the death rate in Gaza during this round of combat is 84 per cent higher than that of the previous 50-day fighting round in summer 2014 when 2,251 Palestinians died.
Due to the Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, approximately 1.4 millions people have been internally displaced. About 566,000 of these people live in precarious circumstances in 148 UNRWA emergency shelters.
