The residents say that the tornado was as fast as it went, lasting less than a minute. However, there is still much damage to be repaired, which will take several months.
One would not know, with the Grinch on her door, that Christina Johnson and her dog had just run to the bathroom for cover when an EF-3 Tornado ripped through the neighborhood.
Johnson says that if it wasn’t for George the dog who saved their lives, the situation could have been very different.
The inside of their home looks like it was never damaged on the sunny, cool December day the day after. But the rubble outside tells the tale of the storm which lasted just seconds, but left a lasting memory.
Johnson and her husband were moving items in the garage when George began acting differently.
He went from being a quiet dog playing in the garage, to wailing and scratching at the concrete like it was Fourth of July. Johnson, unsure of what was causing George’s behavior, took him inside where George continued to scratch and whine at the garage.
Johnson, watching George put himself between her and husband said “that’s not what he does.” So I went back to the room to try to get him calmed down.
She watched as a tree, and later a shed, flew past her window before she could comfort her dog.
They ran into the bathroom.
The wind was strong and I was afraid of the damage it could cause.
Johnson said, “I was thinking only of my hope that we were still alive as we rushed to the restroom.” It took our shed and a tree; now it might be our roof.”
The storm was thankfully only able to cause a cracked window, and some minor injuries on their roof. This is a far cry from the homes of others in the neighborhood, which have lost their entire roofs, and even parts of them.
Two of the neighbor’s homes are scattered in their backyard. Strong winds uproot trees and toss them on the ground.
Johnson stated, “We are thankful that we still have our house and can be here.” We’re thankful to be here, especially when we look at what the storm did all around us.
Johnson, proudly petting her dog’s head and smiling at him with pride, said: “George saved us lives.” If it wasn’t for George, we’d have been out until it was already too late.
He dropped to the ground in front of his home with hail, clouds, and debris all around.
He then immediately went back into action, running inside to bring everyone to safety.
Mullen stated, “I had a completely different mentality.” The only thought in my mind was to make sure that my family would be okay.
Mullen and his family, along with two dogs, hid inside the closet to listen to the most loud wind ever.
He said, “It may have been only a moment and after that it was complete silence.”
The storm left destruction behind it as quickly as it came.
Mullen heard his home being torn apart along with winds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
His house’s wood was falling apart, his windows were broken and shingles were being torn off the roof.
It was his neighbours who were concerned about his house after the storm.
