A woman in Ontario said that she was angry and shocked after paying $80,000 to an Ontario roofing company who claimed that she had roof problems that did not exist.
Judy Poirier of Scarborough told CTV News Toronto that she didn’t experience any problems, such as leaks, with her roof. But the expert convinced her it was so bad, it would collapse.
Poirier reported that in November someone came to her door and told her she appeared to have chimney problems, something she already knew about.
Poirier claimed that while the contractor repaired the chimney for an affordable price, he also told her the roof had a bad condition when he was up on the ladder.
As he was on the roof, he commented that it felt like the surface of the roof had become a bit spongy. Poirier said that he tore off some shingles, and then said “Oh, yeah, there’s some damage.”
Poirier claims that the contractor said he had a roofing expert who was able to make the necessary repairs immediately. The roofer told Poirier that her roof was in a terrible condition when he arrived.
He told me that this was a big job. Poirier said, “There is more damage than we expected.” He added that there were moulds and other damages which could cause the ceiling to fall.
Poirier stated that the initial quote was $10,000. After that, it jumped by another $40,000 and then $30,000 for a grand total of $80. Poirier claimed that they tried to make her pay $125,000.
Poirier gave the money but became suspicious. She called another roofing contractor to check the job, and he told her that the roof did not need any repairs.
She had to pay another $5,000 to have her roof repaired by another company.
Poirier claimed that she had told the first roofing company in her area to stop work. She said that since they had left, they have left some equipment behind, stopped all communication, and are no longer returning her calls. CTV News Toronto was unable to contact the roofer in question because Poirier did not have any record of them other than their phone number and that they had stopped answering.
Poirier has filed a report with the police. CTV News reported that the Toronto Police Service has received several complaints about multiple roof scams in Toronto this year.
Toronto Police issued a press release warning people to watch out for door-to-door scams, to not be pressured into making a quick decision, and to thoroughly research any company before committing to a roof job.
The police warned against making large payments or paying in advance for work that has not been completed.
Poirier, after her bank conducted an investigation, said that she was able to recover some of the money she had paid the scammers. She said she would like to tell her story in order to alert others.
