Amazon uses artificial intelligence in twelve warehouses to check for damaged items before they are shipped. This will help to reduce the number of damaged items sent out, and it will speed up picking and packaging.

Warehouse workers inspect items as part of the order-picking process. Amazon Robotics director of applied sciences, Jeremy Wyatt, says that because most items are in great condition, checking for damage can take a long time. It’s mentally demanding to search for something that is rare, and not your primary responsibility.

The number of damaged articles per 1000 is less than 1 in 1,000

The company is struggling to find employees, so it has automated the warehouses. As the company deals with about 8 billion packages per year, it is a significant number of damaged packages. In order to cope with the shortage of workers, it has recently added robots to its warehouses located in the United States.

Amazon has 12 locations in the US and Europe where the system is being rolled out.

Amazon has now rolled out its AI system to 10 more fulfillment centers in North America and Europe. Amazon claims that the AI is three times as effective at detecting damage than a warehouse employee.

Picking involves checking items

During the packing and picking process, AI is taught to distinguish between damaged and undamaged items. It can then flag any items that are not perfect.

A worker inspects an item that has been broken.

Each order is picked and placed in bins. After the bins pass through the imaging station they are checked to make sure the correct products were selected. They will now be checked for any damage. If something is broken, a worker will remove the bin.
