The church’s symbol was recreated in a new, wooden spire.
The re-opening is anticipated to take place in December of next year.
The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris will be illuminated on the cold nights, shining like a Christmas tree with its iron walkways and wood. Its next inauguration is scheduled for December 8th, 2024.
The Old Lady, a thousand years old, has gained much of her familiar shape after its fire that raged in April 2019. A new wooden spire was built to replace its predecessor which had been destroyed in a shocking incident. It is highlighted in the sky by scaffolding made of silver lattice. The new tourist attraction in the capital is this spire.
The 70-metre high latticework made of oak beams has been bolted to the cathedral’s transept. It is currently in the final stage of renovation, and will reopen its doors within a year.
This symbol is similar to the original
One of Notre Dame’s most iconic symbols, the collapse of its burning spire was one of the most dramatic images of that night’s fire. The fire also damaged the roof and cracked vaults.
The spire, which was originally designed by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc in the middle of the 19th century, has been rebuilt using traditional methods and materials.
The original copper rooster will be placed on top of the spire. Since it was discovered battered and twisted under the rubble following the fire, the weathervane has been restored.
It is expected that the wooden structure will be completely visible by Christmas. This was the promise made to General Jean-Louis Georgelin who, in charge of the restoration and died at 75 in August while on a hike in the Pyrenees, had been making. After the French Revolution, in 1792, it was in an unrepairable state that the spire had been demolished.
New spires are made from oak trees that were up to 18m in length and felled during the winters of 2021-22. The beams will be shaped differently after ten years of drying.
Wooden structure
Philippe Jost is Georgelin’s successor and he aims to finish the complex wooden structure that supports the roofs of the naves and choirs by the spring. By the Paris Olympics, which will take place in July/August next year the metal roof of the nave and choir should be completed.
The fire is thought to have started in “forest”, the wooded area, by an electrical failure. It is believed that the fire started in “forest”, as it’s called, after an electrical fault.
To prevent a fire spreading, the roof is divided into sections.
By December of next year, the $942 million in reconstruction works should be complete.
Before installing furniture and other accessories, the interior walls are being cleaned. After cleaning, the stained-glass windows that survived are being installed. The cathedral organ is being repaired.
You can see the gardens ahead
It is unlikely that the redevelopment of surrounding land, and construction of new entrances will be finished before December 2019.
